There are three types of baptisms every believer must undergo. The baptism into Christ and His body, the baptism in water— otherwise known as water baptism— and lastly the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
The importance and/or significance of water baptism:
It is a declaration of repentance from sin.
It is an open declaration of separation from the world.
It is an outward symbol of committing to the leadership of Jesus Christ. A good analogy is the difference between randomly going running vs. officially registering for a marathon or knowing how to splay a sport vs signing up to join a league.
It is a symbol of identification with the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 6:3-6).
It is to follow the example of the Lord Jesus Christ in fulfilling all righteousness (Matthew 3:3-15; I Peter 2:21).
